Question from Tushar Oora Prabhu. When we get liberated and attain love for Krishna, the material mind loses its existence. My question is, then why should the material mind that we presently have cooperate in cultivating bhakti, which will lead to its own annihilation? Answer.
Firstly, we have to understand that the mind is not a living entity. The mind is subtle matter which has its own programming. And because of that programming, it seems to act in certain ways that seem almost as if they are alive.
Just like a computer with default scripts seems to prompt us, do this, do this, do this. Or if we have a site which promotes some things in a very attractive way, then also it will try this, try this, try this. But although the site does not have any living person over there, it acts as if it is living.
So same way with respect to the mind. So now why should the mind cooperate? First of all, it is we who are alive and it is we who submit to the default scripts of the mind. And all that we need to do is stop submitting to the default scripts of the mind.
How will we do that? By connecting with higher intelligence and higher happiness. So higher intelligence helps us to understand that what the mind is saying is not to our benefit. And actually we are not our minds and we don’t have to obey to the mind.
And secondly, by connecting to a higher happiness is by remembering Krishna. So for the sake of bringing about a sense of urgency within our application of spiritual life and for recognizing the danger of the default scripts of the mind, the mind is often talked about in personified terms. So within the personified terms, why should the mind cooperate in its own annihilation? Yes, because ultimately it is we who are the persons who are seeking happiness and it is we who are identifying with the mind.
And although the mind will ultimately be annihilated, but while it is alive also, it will actually get more happiness. If at all we want to think of the mind in terms that it is living, the mind will actually become satisfied when it becomes fixed in Krishna. Till the mind becomes fixed in Krishna, no matter how much the mind hankers after this and that, jumps for this and that, the mind will not be satisfied.
Because it is looking for happiness in a place of misery. It is looking for large, large amounts of happiness in those activities and those objects which can offer very, very little happiness. And that’s why even for the mind to become happy within this life, within this material existence, the best way is for it to fix itself on Krishna.
And by fixing the mind of Krishna, the mind becomes gradually purified. And the purified mind helps the devotee in practicing Krishna consciousness. And that’s why Krishna says that for such a person, the mind becomes the friend.
For one who has controlled the mind, the mind becomes the friend. So, the mind will also become happy. And ultimately, when we leave the material world, everything material will be left behind.
And so the mind will also be left behind. So, we shouldn’t carry the metaphor of the alive mind too far. And we shouldn’t think that we are committing murder by killing the mind.
Actually, the mind is dead. And even if we consider the mind to be alive, we have to understand that the mind is actually something which we only have scripted. And if it seems to be taking us in the wrong track, it is because of our own scripting.
So, we can change that script by our steady practice of Krishna consciousness. And then the mind will be happy as long as it is alive. And then eventually it will serve its purpose of taking us back to the spiritual world.
Ultimately, the material body comprising of the gross physical body and subtle body are tools given by Krishna to us to help us become purified and return back to Him. And that’s what is the purpose they will serve. Thank you.
