Are Puranas recent as compared to the Vedas?
Thank you Simplicity of the Puranas Puranas Sanskrit To try to prove that That Puranas are written later And the Vedas were Written earlier much earlier Now yes From a historical point of view Puranas Sanskrit is later Sanskrit But the Puranas Are primarily Smriti Smriti means those which are Three-collected Those which are three-collected That means the Puranas Have been trending On oral tradition for a very long time And It’s like Suppose a thief steals a Thief steals cash In a bag Chase chase chase To find out where is the cash Where is the cash Oh the bag was last seen at the airport Oh it was seen in Jakarta Oh it was seen in Canada It was seen in New York And finally I come to New York and I find the bag But finding the bag is not finding the cash Isn’t it? The bag is simply the container of the cash So Apart from the written tradition There is the oral tradition And even if somebody Argues that the Puranas In the written form that they are in are later Sanskrit All that it means is That that is the time When the books were written But that does not prove that is the time Of the origin of the books Is this point clear? So there is The knowledge as Transmitted sound And the knowledge as a textual book So Finding out the history of the textual book doesn’t tell us about The origin of the Transmitted sound And further The Vedic literature has described that Because the Sruti Especially the Puranas and the Ghasas were written for The simple people The Sri Shudra, Vijayakantina So because they were written for the simple people Naturally they are written in a relatively Simpler language So the simplicity of the language Is because of the context It’s meant for The context means it’s Sruti So Sruti is The sages who understand The message and speak it According to the needs of the audience And the needs of the audience is that They are not very Intellectual especially in words They keep the language simple Therefore the simplicity of the language In and of itself Does not prove the lateness of the books So We can finally say that This is a speculative method And if you want to know more in detail The Maharaj is searching for it in India He Brilliantly problematizes The Academic historical method And shows, in fact one of the first scholars Who has said this That the historicity, the history Of the Puranas Is shrouded in Terrifyingly darkness Which is done in group readings Max Müller came up with some readings Of when the Puranas were written And they were used timely And some of the other scholars Reputed him And the other scholars were quite influential They reputed him And Max Müller towards the end of his life Admitted that The date which I had thought of the Puranas earlier Was wrong But somehow subsequent scholars Considered his later conclusion to be wrong And they stuck to the earlier date that he had given And he himself disowned The later origin of the Veda, of the Puranas But subsequent scholars have stuck to that So L. Rorschach has written A book on the compilation of the Puranas And then also he gives an Analysis of Puranic origins He doesn’t accept the Puranas as a revealed word But he does problematize The historical Historical critical method Of studying literature And points out the problems with that So basically we say that These are books which are meant to be Reviewed The books which are meant to be reviewed And those books which are meant to be reviewed They should be learned from those who are Living those books Trying to learn these books From people who never take these books seriously You will not get any benefit from this A simple example Suppose There is a book On Sir Jerry That is written In ancient Chinese And it contains Brilliant insights About how to perform surgery And how to treat and cure people Is it a broad book on medicine? It’s brilliant surgery Now there is a surgeon Who has done a lifetime of practice Based on that ancient book Which is the Chinese He has done practice on that book And has cured thousands and thousands of people And now he feels that this knowledge Should be upheld in English So now he learns the future And then he translates the book From Chinese into English And there is another scholar He is a scholar of religion He is a scholar of language He is a scholar of English and Chinese And he translates the book from Chinese to English Now whose translation Did you have a better quality? The surgeon Why? Because the surgeon is living that book Isn’t it? From the linguistic point of view You may fault the surgeon’s language But then you have to see It’s such a It’s such an elementary logical fault That so many people don’t understand it It’s surprising Just because I know English Just because I am a scholar of English Does that mean I become a scholar On any book that is written in English? Obviously not Isn’t it? If a book is on quantum physics My scholarship in English Will not help you unravel a book on quantum physics It’s an entirely different field But some scholars Just because they learn Sanskrit We have the authority to translate complex books into logic No, just knowledge of the language Does not mean Proficiency in everything That is written in that language So from a linguistic point of view These people may argue That this Sanskrit is recent, that Sanskrit is old All that is okay But how much are these people living According to this book? Are these books transforming their lives or others lives? No doubt We see that Pacharyas are like the doctor They have lived the Gita They have lived the Puranas They have lived the Vedic literature They have transformed the lives of many people And now they are perceiving the history So when people start getting Too much into these sort of technicalities You tell them In life all of us have to make choices What do you want to study The Vedic literature for? Are you wanting to study them Just as literature you have written in ancient India And you want to deconstruct them as literature Or are you Wanting to study them as books That will add value and meaning to your life? You want to study books to improve yourself Then better Learn those books from those Who have studied it for many years If you are simply a student of literature If you want to study the Vedic literature Then study from that literature You may learn something about the book But you will not be transformed We are studying these books for human beings And that’s why we will prefer The traditional knowledge We will choose the traditional knowledge Thank you Thank you so much.
