Do the daivi maya in Gita 7.14 and daivi prakriti in 9.13 to the same thing or different things?
Question what is the relationship between Daivi Maya mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita in 7.14 and Daivi Prakriti mentioned in 9.13 are they referring to the same thing or different things Mahatma Anustuman Partha Daivin Prakriti Ashutaha Vajanityananya Manaso Yantva Bhoota Dinauyayam 9.13 in the Bhagavad Gita describing the characteristics of those who understand Krishna's position and accordingly devote themselves to him prior to this the Gita has talked about Krishna's relationship with the material world with Prakriti which concludes in 9.10 Mayadhyakshena Prakriti and then unlike Prakriti which is insentient living beings are sentient and they can approach Krishna in different ways so 11.12 describes those who misunderstand Krishna those who mistake Krishna to be an ordinary material person they become frustrated that's what these two verses say now after describing this lower extreme of understanding Krishna that is misunderstanding Krishna now the next two verses 13 and 14 describe the upper extreme of understanding Krishna properly and therein it is described that first of all these people who understand Krishna properly are Mahatmas they are great souls and they are Daivyam Prakriti Mahasiddha Daivyam Prakriti is a very interesting usage in 7.14 the similar usage comes up there it is saying that this Maya is Daivyam and here it is saying Daivyam Prakriti Mahasiddha so see there is a difference between the uses of the word Daivyam over there although both places you could say the word Daivyam means divine but still the context makes a world of difference there it refers to a potency from which one is to be liberated become liberated so said that this Daivyam Maya is the Maya which imprisons us and to come out of it we need to do Prapadyante and then those who do Prapadyante the Gita goes on describing 7.19 Bahunam Vimunamante Gyanavan Maan Prapadyante Vasudevah Sarvamiti Samahatma Sudurlabha so it describes how those who do Prapadyante to Krishna they are Mahatmas it means from the context we can clearly see that the first Daivyam Prakriti that means this 7.14 Daivyam Maya not Prakriti the word Maya and Prakriti can sometimes mean similar things this refers to material energy from which one has to escape and for escaping which one has to surrender to the Supreme Lord and here it is said that those who are fixed in that Lord they have taken shelter of the Daivyam Prakriti so this is a very interesting combination that first we give up Daivyam Maya and take shelter of Krishna and by that we become Mahatma that's what 7.14 and 19 together say now 9.13 says that those who are Mahatmas take shelter of Daivyam Prakriti so this seems to be like a contradiction you reject Daivyam Maya and then gradually come to the level of becoming Mahatma then the person takes the shelter of Daivyam Prakriti so clearly this Daivyam Prakriti is different from Daivyam Maya so the word Daivyam Maya is used to refer to material energy whereas Daivyam Prakriti is referred to spiritual energy so we give up we break free from material energy surrender to Krishna and in the process of surrendering to Krishna we surrender to spiritual energy Daivyam Prakriti often refers to Srimati Radharani who is the devotional energy personified and she gives shelter to all living beings so now the word Daivyam is used in both cases but the point is different the point of using Daivyam in 7.14 is to indicate that material energy is very difficult to overcome because it is also Krishna's energy it is a divine energy and that's why overcoming it is very difficult and that's why to overcome it one must surrender to Krishna just as Krishna is omnipotent his energy is also extremely potent almost omnipotent and except for him nobody can overcome that and he controls it he also enables those who surrender to him to overcome it so there the emphasis of the word Daivyam is that it is unsurpassable that Daivyam needs to be seen in conjunction with Duratyaya that it is very very difficult to overcome whereas the Daivyam Prakriti here is used to is used to indicate that there is a transcendental nature the word Prakriti normally refers to material nature but we also see in 4.6 Sanjayopisa Navdayatma Bhutanameshwaropisa Prakritin Swam Adhishthaya Sambhavam Niyatamaya Prakritin Swam Adhishthaya by my own nature I am allotressed to this world so here the word Prakriti is used to refer to transcendental nature and Krishna has his own internal energy and one takes shelter of that internal energy to go beyond the material energy or rather after going beyond the material energy one takes shelter of the internal energy it can work both ways even while we are in the material energy we are in Daivyagunamayi Duratyayamaya at that time also we can start practicing Bhakti that time we can become Daivya Prakriti Ashrita to some extent we can start that process of Daivya Prakriti Ashrita but as we become more and more purified then we can take shelter of Krishna's internal energy more completely and in 9.13 it is described that those who are Ananya Manaso their mind is not distracted to anywhere else this is in direct contrast to what Krishna has been telling or both Arjuna has been saying also that Chanchalamana Krishna so their mind is always Chanchala so the Mahatama their mind has gone beyond the Chanchala and has become Ananya Manaso fixed on one object that is Krishna so that is the means by which we can go from Daivyamaya to Daivya Prakriti also by trying as much as possible to fix the mind on Krishna we will eventually be able to attain Krishna's lotus feet so that's why we need to look at the context and carefully consider the overall point that is made in the passage to understand the meanings of the words so one Daivyamaya is used to indicate in 7.14 that the energy is almost unsurpassable and the other Daivy is used to indicate this is divine in the sense of being Krishna's own potency which will take us closer to Krishna so Daivyamaya in the way the Gaudiya Vaishnavacharya has explained to us, Daivyamaya will refer to Mahamaya and Daivyamaya Prakriti will refer to Yogamaya so those who give up the shelter of Daivyamaya they are Mahatmas and those Mahatmas take shelter of Yogamaya as 9.13 describes Thank you.
