Kulmala Stotra, Mantra 31, Part 6. Vyasana Bhujaka Sandashta Santran Mantra. So Bhujaka is snake. Vyasana is the distress.
It can mean material desires or it can mean material distress, both. Because material desires sometimes immediately and surely eventually lead to material distress. Vyasana Bhujaka Sandashta, one who has been bitten by the snake of material distress, such a person, Santran, such a person attains relief by this mantra.
So now in the Vedic tradition it is understood that snake poison can be countered in various ways. So one of the ways of countering snake poison is not necessarily administering physical antidotes but by administering mantric antidotes. That means that when certain mantras are chanted, the poison that has entered the body is made to get countered by the utterance of that sound vibration at that particular frequency.
This may not be a science that is comprehensible right now to modern scientists but it is a science of a different kind. Sound has remarkable effects on our emotions or our consciousness and even our biological functioning. So researchers have shown that different sounds stimulate different kinds of not just mental emotions but physical reactions also.
So soothing, gentle, sober music tends to relax not just the mind but also the bodily muscles and secrete hormones accordingly. On the other hand passionate, violent, noisy music has the opposite effect mentally and physically although it tends to stimulate initially but it actually overall makes our nerves high-strung. So just as this special sound which controls and counters the poison of the snakes has some mysterious potency which our ordinary experience hints at similarly the sound of the mahamantra has some extraordinary potency.
Of course this potency unlike the snake poison-revealing potency is spiritual. And what does it do? At both levels it acts. If we say that yesana refers to material distress then if we can just try to concentrate the mind on Krishna when we are feeling distressed then that act of concentration will give us relief from the distress.
The problem may not go away but the problem will not dominate our mind and ultimately the problem is an external situation but also it is an internal perception. The magnitude of the problem is determined by how much we dwell on it. And if we just become problem conscious we become miserable but when the problem is there it seems to have a mental glue that keeps it fixed to our mind.
But when we chant Hare Krishna and try to fix the mind on Krishna then that glue gets weakened and evaporated and instead of being problem conscious we become Krishna conscious and that enables us to see the problem with perspective that yes there have been many problems in my life and this may seem very big but eventually this will also go away and I have to do the needful to tackle with it but I definitely not get bogged down by it or overwhelmed by it. When we are alone against the problem, the problem appears big and we appear small but when we connect with Krishna, when we understand Krishna is with me then with Krishna we see ourselves as big and the problem as not so big. That’s how Krishna consciousness helps us to become free from the distress and of course if the Vyasana refers to bad habits, bad desires then surely the Hare Krishna Mahamantra drives them out also.
We discuss them in Samsara Utshed Mantra. So both ways, the causes of distress, the problems that we face and the desires that we are tormented by periodically can be removed by the chanting of the holy names Shree Harinam Prabhu Ki Jai
