Generally, one of the biggest obstacles in serious prayer, chanting or meditation is that we feel that we have a lot to do. And there are so many things to do. And the thoughts of doing all those things distract us from our chanting.
But we need to remember that for doing things, we need not just the time, but also the vision, the clear understanding. Otherwise, even if we have the time, we do things wrong and then we make a mess of things. And then we get into a lot of anxiety and spend far more time trying to undo the mess.
So if we have a clear vision, then we can make correct choices because we don’t get carried away by the heat of the moment. We don’t get consumed by the emotions generated by the situations. And we are able to make sound decisions and to be able to stay detached while being in the world and acting in the world.
We need to have a strong connection with that being who is detached. So that opportunity for connecting with that detached being is there in chanting. So of course, our goal in chanting is not that we become more effective in our work in the world.
Our goal in chanting is to develop love for Krishna. But when this particular thought troubles us, when practical situations demand action, at that time, the purpose of developing love for Krishna can seem quite remote and not at all urgent. So at that time, when we have to battle the mind, when a war, we have to use the weapon which works.
So sometimes when the mind is troubling with this thought that there’s so much to be done, then we can combat it by this meditation that, yes, whatever is to be done requires not just time but clear vision. And clear vision requires detachment. And connection with Krishna will enable me to have that detachment and clear vision.
Therefore, let me focus now on the holy name and let me seriously and strongly connect myself with Krishna. That is what will help me effectively deal with whatever problems are troubling me right now. And that way we can move forward wholeheartedly in our meditation.
