Thank you. The soul of the universe, bhuta, refers to material existence. Atma is the soul and bhuta-bhavanaha So bhavana refers to that which causes growth.
So the Lord is the indwelling soul of the universe and just as the soul causes the growth of the body, similarly the Lord who is causing the activity to go on within the universe When we try to understand how life works, one of the things which we realize is that we are not alone in making our life work. Certainly we have to work, but our work is only a part of the story. We may work hard to earn money, to put food on the dining table, but we can’t control the digestion.
It is Krishna who has set up the mechanism of digestion and as he talks about it in the Bhagavad Gita, that I am the indwelling super-soul in the heart of all living beings, in the stomach and it is I who digest. I who digest the four different kinds of food that I have taken. So recognizing that we have to ultimately depend on some higher agency helps us to recognize that connecting, spending, investing time and connecting with that higher agency is not a waste of time if I have to use a car to go to my workplace then spending time on maintaining the car, on improving the car is actually time gained, not time lost, because that is going to help me every day that one time investment or whatever time I spend on it is going to increase my efficiency.
Of course the Supreme Lord is not a car, He is not a tool for us to get things done, but the point is if something is important for us in getting things done then spending time on that is sensible and even essential. So by meditating thus on the importance of our Krishna connection, how without this action nothing will happen, we can get the mind of its obsession with the many things that are to be done. The mind often distracts us by making us think that, oh I have to do this, I have to do that and there are so many things to do, how will I ever be able to complete them? Let me just put aside this chanting and even when I am chanting let me plan other things.
But fixing the mind on this reality or at least meditating intellectually on this reality that our work alone doesn’t make things work. So we will be able to recognize that if I please Krishna it is not that I will be flattering him but I will be understanding what he is doing, what he is trying to accomplish and how I should cooperate in his plan. So even when we chant bhutaatma bhuta bhavana we understand that the same person whose holy names I am chanting he is present within my heart, he is actually the soul of my soul.
bhutaatma bhutaatma sarva bhutaatma bhutaatma the Bhagavad Gita uses the word also that he is the soul of all souls. Now the Bhagavad Gita may use it in a different context but the point is that Krishna is the soul of all souls in the sense that he is the essence, it is because of him that all life is possible and all life it continues to survive. bhuta bhavana So by meditating thus on our connection with Krishna and praying to him for help in moving forward in our spiritual life, in our chanting and in our whatever material responsibilities are there we can feel, we can sense, we can contemplate the importance of our relationship with him and then get the impetus to invest whatever time is required for that relationship.
