Bhagavatam-daily 207 – 11.11.12 – Detachment enables us to be situated in matter but not bound by it

Thank you 11 11 12 13 sattva is attached or some sattva is utterly unattached completely unattached while being situated in material nature just as the sky the sun and the wind are unattached Vaisharade Vaisharadeya Ikshaya Sangam Vaisharada person is expert Ikshaya sees and stays detached Sheetaya Chinna Samshaya Sheetaya is sharp and with all doubts Samshaya Pratibuddha Pratibuddha awakened as if from a dream Nanatvat Minivartate so one turns away from the duality of the variety of the material world nonsense it turns away from Minivartate so this was essentially stating that person the wise person the liberated person the self-realized person although situated in material nature Prakrityasthopyasamya is not bound although situated in material nature and is further not so examples for not being bound are just like the ether sun and the wind so the ether is the subtlest of the gross elements and the ether although present everywhere doesn’t mix into anything in fact Krishna uses these three examples also Savita is sun and Anilaha is wind so this example is used by Krishna in 13.33-34 and then 9.6 13.33 and 34 refer to the how the ether and the sun and 9.6 refers to the wind although the examples are used in different context 9.6 is used clearly for the supreme being while being situated in the sky ayu sarvatra go mahan sarvani bhutani vatsthani tya upadharayan so although the wind moves about in the vastness of the sky the wind still says distant from the sky the two don’t get entangled with each other so the sky if you consider it to be like a upside down bowl then the sky limits not the movement of the air but only the area of the movement of the air so essentially there is freedom so here it is said that yes the soul is connected with the body the soul is the soul’s consciousness is going to be rooted from the body soul cannot be conscious of anything else apart from the body nothing else can be its vehicle of consciousness as long as the soul is in material existence although consciousness while the soul is distanced detached but from the point of view of nature the situation in the body prakritistha as it was said the soul is still in the body also but still not entangled and the other two examples are actually just as although ether is everywhere but ether doesn’t mix with ether is the background of all existence but doesn’t get entangled with the other things which it contains similarly the soul doesn’t get entangled and ether ether prakashyati krishnam lokam imam ravi krishnam prakashyati bharatam so there it is stated that just as if one sun illuminates the whole universe kshetram kshetrittha krishnam similarly the kshetri the soul situated in the kshetra of the body in the territory of the body kshetram kshetrittha krishnam in this way the soul illuminates the body prakashyati bharatam so illuminates now here the point is that through these examples it is being conveyed how the soul stays in material existence the soul might still be in material existence in terms of ontological reality is not in terms of not in material existence in terms of emotional proximity in terms of physical ontological means factual reality in terms of ontological reality as the soul is in material world but in terms of emotional proximity soul is no longer in material existence because the soul is distance is detached as transcended material existence and through these various metaphors drawn from nature this point is being conveyed again and again here that actually the soul can stay detached now you can understand it with a simple example say somebody is watching a movie and while watching a movie there is another person who has no interest in the movie then such a person will not get absorbed in the movie so the movie will play but the playing of the movie is not going to affect the person who is not letting the consciousness get caught in the movie so yes the sound and the light coming out from the screen may spread through the room but if a person does not let one’s consciousness get caught in it then a person will not get caught in the in the illusion that is being displayed on the screen and in that way the soul can stay detached so we will discuss 13th verse in the next talk
