Can ghosts commit suicide?

Question. Can ghosts commit suicide? Answer. No.

Suicide refers to destruction of the gross physical body and ghosts are disembodied beings in the sense that they do not have any gross physical body. Our existence is three dimensional. We are souls covered by a subtle body and a gross body.

So our gross body is destroyed at the time of death. And when a person dies because of suicide or some other similar unnatural means means one kills oneself then often the people become the soul becomes a ghost and once in the soul gets a ghostly body. So now the subtle body is not destructible in the same way as the gross body is.

The subtle body is not eternal but it is far far longer more long lasting than the gross body. The same subtle body continues on till the end of material existence which may go on for millions of lifetimes. So therefore subtle body is not destroyable.

And in fact the destruction of subtle body means liberation from material existence. That's called Atyantika Pralaya. The ultimate destruction of the subtle body brings the liberation of the soul from material existence.

So till that sort of destruction happens one is bound to be in material existence and ghosts are long long away from that kind of destruction subtle body because that side of subtle body destruction happens only by purification. So therefore ghosts cannot cut short their misery in the material existence in their ghostly bodies. So if a person becomes a ghost then that person has to stay for whatever duration of karma that is there and only then the ghost can become free from that ghostly body and acquire next gross body.
