Can we say that intelligence comprises of knowledge processing discrimination analysis and determination?
Thank you question can knowledge processing discernment analysis and discrimination be said to be the features of the intelligence answer the meanings of words are not fixed in different context words can mean different things and based on those context certain ideas can be included in the ambit of certain words and sometimes it may not be so with respect to the word intelligence in a general sense the word intelligence means that ability to process information properly and to act in a act in a wise or responsible or an effective constructive way so intelligence we may measure it by the IQ quotient intelligence quotient but then that measures primarily the information processing ability and we talk about emotional intelligence and there are nine types of intelligences so intelligence has a general meaning in which we could include information processing analysis discernment determination could also be included in that general meaning of the word intelligence because people who are intelligent they will find reasons to perceive it in their determination even if they don't exactly feel like doing whatever it is they have resolved to so intelligence can be the booster of determination if you consider the chariot body metaphor there in terms of analysis the horses of the senses the reins of the mind the charioteer is the intelligence and the soul is the passenger so if you say discernment or discrimination means knowing where to go and where not to go so that definitely is present in the charioteer has to be present in the charioteer as per the direction where the soul wishes to go and then determination means that even if the horses start going in the wrong direction the charioteer has the strength to pull the horses back in the right direction so in that context we could say it is the intelligence that has discrimination knowing what where I should be going and then pulling the senses of the mind in that direction with determination with strength what is required now knowledge processing and analysis they can be considered similar discrimination basically means it is more of a moral evaluation whereas knowledge processing can be more in terms of the inputs that are coming in which is more important which is less important so if two people are speaking to me or if I am hearing something as well as I am feeling something say somebody is touching me on the back where I am also speaking to someone so now which to respond to it may not be a moral evaluation but there is basically processing of the information that is happening that is coming to us through the senses so that is done by the intelligence and analysis of course can be of different types so all kinds of analysis are done by the intelligence but Prabhupada writes in the tenth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita purport that intelligence means to see things with their proper perspective so taking information from the senses evaluating which is more important which is less important and then arriving at a course of action this could be said to be faculties of the intelligence but to give a list of these specific four then why not some more or why not some less we could very well say that knowledge processing, information processing and analysis could be included in one category itself as far as determination is concerned if we consider 18th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita Krishna differentiates buddhi and dhruti over there so there is 18.30 to 32 which talks about buddhi in the three modes and then 18.33 to 35 talks about dhruti in the three modes and if you look at the difference the difference is largely in terms of perseverance and its choice of action and of perseverance in action so so when one misunderstands the wrong course of action to be the right course of action and the right course of action to be the wrong course of action this is buddhi, knowledge in the mode of ignorance sorry intelligence in the mode of ignorance and then three verses later when Krishna talks about see here determination in the mode of ignorance is daydreaming, moroseness fearfulness lamentation so basically when one does this continuously one just keeps doing it continuously that means persisting unhealthy behavioral patterns that is determination in the mode of ignorance so choosing a course of action the right course of action is the faculty of intelligence and persevering in the right course of action that is the faculty of determination in 6.25 also Krishna says while fixing the mind slowly bring it in the control of the self so he says with intelligence sustained by conviction or determination Prabhupada translates buddhi as conviction over there although in the 18th chapter he translates it as determination often we think of conviction as something related with the intelligence intellectual conviction but we also talk about faith and conviction as being together so faith is what we believe it not just what we understand and conviction is how that faith translates into our actions that is where determination comes into the picture so here also intelligence and determination are related and yet they are not exactly same so intelligence sustained by determination so I would if we are given a generic categorization in terms of intelligence as in conversational use there intelligence can be associated with various kinds but in a technical analysis which the Bhagavatam gives dhruti which the Gita gives dhruti is considered a different faculty if you look at the Bhagavatam it gives the characteristics of the intelligence in the third canto samshaya viparyaso nishchaya smtiri which is svabhiti lakshinam buddhitah prathak svabhiti uchyate buddhir five characteristics are doubt samshaya viparyaso doubt then misapprehension nishchaya correct apprehension smtiri remembrance so for example if you are going in a desert and we see water an animal will just go towards the water and get deluded but say we doubt is this water over there or maybe it is not and then oh that was a misapprehension it's not water and then we may ask others or we may come to know by that ok that's a mirage it looks like water but it's not water and then after that smtiri next time when we see the mirage it is a recollection that comes and then we understand that ok this is water and this is what is to be this is not water so I may not go over there so in this way we can have different functions of the intelligence but here again we see intelligence is talked about in terms of knowledge processing information processing that evaluating whether our processing of the information is right or not and then remembering how we have evaluated in the past and learning from that is also considered to be a faculty of intelligence in the Bhagavad Gita that sequence also Krishna says when the smriti is lost smriti brahmacharya buddhi na asho so intelligence is not just about information processing it is also about processing the information that is coming in from the senses as well as the information that we have within us and arriving at a right evaluation.
